Michelle Charters OBE is the Head of National Museums Liverpool’s International Slavery Museum (ISM) and the Co-Director of the Centre for Study of International Slavery (CSIS), a partnership between National Museums Liverpool and the University of Liverpool.

Prior to taking up her post in January 2024, Michelle was a key supporter of the museums since 1994 and took up a position as a trustee of NML in 2018 until 2023.

She was active in the charity sector for 40 years before joining NML last year.

Her past roles include being Chief Executive Officer of Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre, founding Chair of Merseyside Black History Month Group (2003-2009); the first black female Trustee of Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres and a Common Purpose Matrix Graduate.

Michelle is passionate about the promotion of diversity recognition and equality of opportunities in the museum and heritage sector.  She leads the Curatorial team of ISM and has consistently worked tirelessly to build bridges between institutions, sectors and communities.  She has local, regional, national and international influence, for her work in terms of introducing unique approaches of partnership and collaboration work to remove barriers and tackle all forms of discrimination.

Michelle received her OBE recognition for longstanding work with communities in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours.
