Job Announcement: Research Assistant on the Digital d’Holbach project

Dr Ruggero Sciuto is looking to appoint one or two Research Assistant(s) to a) help with the preparation of a digital edition of an eighteenth-century French text by Paul Thiry d’Holbach: Le Bon Sens, ou idées naturelles opposées aux idées surnaturelles and b) transcribe a few eighteenth-century works by d’Holbach and upload them to Tout d’Holbach, a fully searchable database of d’Holbach’s works.

The successful candidate(s) will check various eighteenth-century editions of Le Bon Sens against the original 1772 edition, reporting any variants on a .doc(x) file. They will also check OCR transcriptions of some of d’Holbach’s works and convert them into .XML files. Detailed instructions for both tasks will be provided.

The successful candidate should: be fluent in French and show familiarity with 18th-century French spelling conventions; demonstrate utmost accuracy and attention to detail; and be able to work independently.

They will be paid at grade 6 rate (£15.37, plus holiday pay) and work for 300 hours between July 2021 and September 2021. The total hours may be split between two or more candidates if need be – please outline your anticipated availability/max number of hours per week in your application.
