Voltaire Foundation Annual Report 2009-2010

People

Dr Jonathan Mallinson continued as Acting Director in Michaelmas Term; the Director returned from sabbatical leave in Hilary Term. Mrs Janet Godden, Deputy Publisher, was decorated by the French Ambassador in June, and appointed Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques. Dr Antonio Gurrado, Marie Curie Fellow, joined the editorial team for a period of two years. There are now a total of five Research Fellows associated with the Complete works of Voltaire project: Professor David Adams, Professor Graham Gargett, Professor John Renwick, Dr Diego Venturino and Professor David Williams.

Publications

In another successful year for the Foundation, a total of 23 new titles were published (see Annexe). Six volumes of the Complete works of Voltaire were published during the academic year, so that the Foundation remains on course to complete this project by the target date of 2018. Twelve volumes were published in the SVEC (Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century) collection, which continues to publish the best modern research in both English and French, on all aspects of the Enlightenment. The series has consolidated its position as the foremost collection dedicated to research on the eighteenth century and continues to be the preferred place of publication for both young and established scholars. We also published new volumes in all of our correspondence collections, and in addition to these print publications, we published electronically, in Electronic Enlightenment (now housed at the Bodleian Library), the first tranche of letters in the Correspondance de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.

Research programme (Besterman Centre for the Enlightenment)

Inaugurated in 2008, the Besterman Centre is a research centre of the Humanities Division housed at the Voltaire Foundation. The Programme Director this year was Dr Kate Tunstall. The Centre organised three major international conferences:
— Les 250 ans de Candide: lectures et relectures (funding was received from the John Fell Fund,
the French Embassy, the Maison Française d’Oxford, the CNRS, and the Modern Languages
Faculty).
— Celebrating Diderot Studies (in collaboration with the CIERL, Université Laval).

— Theatrical Institutions and their Quarrels (1660-1848) (in collaboration with the GRIHL
(EHESS and Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle) and Paris X-Nanterre). The Foundation continued to serve as secretariat of the International Society for Eighteenth- Century Studies (ISECS), the principal interdisciplinary forum for eighteenth-century research. The Besterman Centre collaborated with the University of Leeds and the Université de Paris IV- Sorbonne to organise our annual postgraduate conference, this year held in Leeds for the first time. Besterman Lectures were delivered by Professor Gregory S. Brown, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (‘Beaumarchais and the Bastille: An Aristocratic Villa in Revolutionary Paris’), and by Professor Colin Jones FBA, Queen Mary London (‘Laughing All the Way to the French
Revolution: The Caricatures of Charles-Germain de Saint-Aubin’). The Foundation continued to host the Enlightenment Workshop. The Foundation collaborated with the New York Public Library to create Candide 2.0, an online and interactive edition of Candide
(http://candide.nypl.org/text/).

Development

The French Academy has awarded the Voltaire Foundation the 2010 Prix Hervé Deluen, worth €25,000, in recognition of the achievement of the Complete works of Voltaire. The Complete works of Voltaire has received two generous private donations, and has also received awards towards the publication of specific volumes from the British Academy, the Carnegie Trust, and the Union académique internationale (UAI). The Correspondance de Mme de Graffigny is supported by a private sponsor. The Correspondance de Bayle is supported by the CNRS and the Fondation de la Poste. The Correspondance générale de La Beaumelle is supported by the Parc de Cévennes, the Comité genevois pour le protestantisme français and the Carlsbergfondet. The John Fell Fund has given support to the Besterman Centre for the Enlightenment. The Wiener-Anspach Foundation has funded an exchange research programme to be run jointly with the Université libre de Bruxelles.
